Scratching the surface:
This is a pretty wonderful album. Adrianne Lenker is special. She's a top tier songwriter. Her lyrics are In the same league as those of Leonard Cohen, Greg Brown, Tom Waits, TVZ, etc. But they're different. They don't have the literary quality of those songwriters. She takes a different approach. Her lyrics are like the brushstrokes of an abstract painting. Her messages are personal and deep.
Her voice is unique. It reminds me a little of Joanna Newsom. The New Yorker says, "Her voice is soft but substantial, and contains an airy tremble that resembles birdsong. On occasion she let's it stretch and fracture."
Top Tracks:
All of sides 1 & 2. Ok, Ok, I'll go with ingydar, anything and forwards beckon rebound.
Deep in the grooves
Some of Adrianne's best lyrics address death and family. Yeah, I know those topics have been covered once or twice before. But Adrianne has a lot to add to the conversation.
The horse lies naked in the shed.
Evergreen anodyne decompounding
Flies draw sugar from his head . . .
. . . The dog walk in and the crow lies in his jaw like lead.
Everything eats and is eaten, Time is fed . .
- Adrianne Lenker, ingydar
Christmas Eve with your mother and sis
Don't wanna fight but your mother insists . . .
Grocery store list, now you get pissed
Unchecked calls and messages
I don't wanna be the owner of your fantasy
I just wanna be a part of your family
And I don't wanna talk about anything
I don't wanna talk anything . . .
I wanna sleep in your car while your driving
Lay on your lap when I'm crying.
- Adrianne Lenker, anything
